The Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is a quick and easy way to apply for Canada PR visa as a foreign skilled worker or international student.
Launched in 2017 as a test for three years, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) initially decided to end the pilot on December 31, 2021. However, because of its huge success, they made it a permanent program on January 1, 2022. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot was replaced by the currently known Atlantic Immigration Program.
The AAIP is an employer-driven program designed to help employers in 1 of Canada’s 4 Atlantic provinces, to hire potential immigrant candidates - for jobs they have been unable to fill locally. The four Atlantic provinces include New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
To be eligible to apply under the Atlantic Immigration Program, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Work Experience
Education
You must have either:
If you have studied outside Canada, you would need an Education Credential Assessment (ECA). Your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report must be dated within the five years preceding the date of receiving your application.
Language Proficiency
You need to meet the minimum required language proficiency as stated in the job offer for the TEER category in NOC 2021. This can either be the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) or the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC). To be eligible you must:
Settlement funds
You need to show that you have enough money to support yourself and your family during your stay in Canada. The amount of money you would need will depend on the family size.
Number of family members | Funds required(in Canadian dollars) |
1 | $3,439 |
2 | $4,281 |
3 | $5,263 |
4 | $6,391 |
5 | $7,248 |
6 | $8,175 |
7 | $9,101 |
For each additional family member | $926 |
The Atlantic Immigration Program application process is carried out in two steps:
STEP 1: Endorsement
Upon being offered a position by a designated AIP employer, you will be linked with settlement services to get the development of a comprehensive settlement plan. Subsequently, you are required to submit this plan to your designated employer, who will then initiate the application for endorsement with the relevant department. Upon successful processing, you will obtain a provincial endorsement certificate. If a work permit is necessary, you may also be issued a work permit support letter as part of the overall process.
STEP 2: Immigration Application
You can now submit your application to apply for Canada PR visa, along with the endorsement certificate and other necessary documents, to the IRCC. The IRCC will review and process your PR application. If necessary, you have the option to apply for a work permit while awaiting the processing of your permanent resident application. Upon approval, you gain the flexibility to live and work in Atlantic Canada as a permanent resident.
The processing time for the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is 6-8 months. However, processing times may vary depending on individual circumstances and the volume of applications received by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
To apply under the Atlantic Immigration Program, you would need to pay the following fee:
Nearly 90% of immigrants who got Canada PR visas through AIP chose to remain in the Atlantic region. The pilot was highly effective in both supporting Atlantic employers in labour market gaps and the high demand of foreign workers wishing to move to Canada.
The Atlantic provinces in Canada collectively issued back-to-back invitations to apply for Canada PR visa in 2023. The same trend is expected to be followed in 2024 as well.
Just remember, the Atlantic Canada job market values diversity, and many employers actively seek international talent. By showcasing your unique skills and experiences, you can increase your chances of securing a rewarding job in Canada.
