Canada needs healthcare workers!
In the last quarter of 2022, there were 143,695 job vacancies in the Healthcare and Social Assistance category - making it the sector with the highest number of job vacancies across the country. Interestingly, a quarter of all Registered Nurses and 36% of Physicians in Canada were born outside of the country.
Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) offers a tool known as the Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS). This system provides insights into the future employment prospects of various occupations in demand in Canada, projecting the number of job openings in specific occupations from 2022 to 2031.
Healthcare is one of those sectors in Canada that has continued to face drastic labour shortages.
Former Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said, "Health professionals have been working around the clock to provide world-class care to individuals in communities across Canada, but it's no secret that our health system needs more workers to continue delivering the quality care that people in Canada deserve."
1. Registered Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses (NOC 31301)
These healthcare heroes play a crucial role in patient care. The demand for Registered Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses is high across the country, but provinces like Ontario and British Columbia are leading the way with numerous job opportunities in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are an integral part of the healthcare system. If you're considering this profession, Alberta and Manitoba are excellent choices. These provinces have a growing demand for LPNs to support healthcare teams and provide essential patient care.
Nursing Coordinators and Supervisors are essential for ensuring smooth healthcare operations. Saskatchewan and Quebec are witnessing a surge in demand for professionals to take on these crucial roles, making them attractive options for immigrants with the necessary skills and experience.
The backbone of primary health care, General Practitioners, and Family Physicians are needed throughout Canada. However, consider Nova Scotia or New Brunswick to find the best jobs. These provinces are actively recruiting healthcare professionals to address the needs of their communities.
Specialist Physicians, with their expertise in specific medical fields, are highly valued. For those aiming to specialize, Ontario stands out. The province's diverse healthcare landscape offers opportunities for specialists to make a meaningful impact.
If you're in the field of Health Diagnosing and Treating, consider moving to British Columbia or Alberta. These provinces are experiencing a growing need for professionals like Optometrists and Chiropractors, creating opportunities for immigrants to establish themselves in these rewarding careers.
Pharmacists play a vital role in the healthcare system, ensuring proper medication management. Provinces like Ontario and Quebec have a high demand for Pharmacists, providing a welcoming environment for immigrants in this field.
For aspiring Physiotherapists, Manitoba and Saskatchewan offer favorable conditions. These provinces are actively seeking skilled professionals to enhance their healthcare services, presenting a welcoming environment for immigrants with a passion for physiotherapy.
Between 2017 and 2022, Canada welcomed around 21,000 Healthcare workers - just over 4,000 workers a year. IRCC plans to double that number, bringing in around 8,000 new Healthcare workers a year.
On May 31, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it had finalized a new category-based selection for Express Entry. Healthcare occupations are one of the six categories chosen by IRCC to prioritize Express Entry category-based draws in 2024.
In addition to the category-based draws in Express Entry, numerous provinces have conducted draws specifically for healthcare professionals using targeted streams within the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). For example, Alberta has a Designated Healthcare Pathway, under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program.
Several provinces in Canada have already conducted targeted draws for Healthcare occupations in 2023. For instance, Alberta recently launched a specific Healthcare pathway, under its Alberta Advantage Immigration Program. British Columbia and Ontario were also among the provinces that recently invited foreign workers in a Healthcare occupation.
A career in Healthcare in Canada offers not only job security but also the chance to make a positive impact on people's lives. Whether you're on the front lines of patient care or behind the scenes in administration, these in-demand healthcare jobs provide diverse opportunities for immigrants wanting to work & settle in Canada.
