Attention healthcare workers in India!
Canada is seeking skilled professionals working for years in the healthcare industry. Registered nurses, medical doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists – you name it, Canada has job openings for you.
Indian healthcare workers planning to apply for a Canada PR visa from India must know that in the last quarter of 2022, Canada had 143, 695 job openings in the Healthcare and Social Assistance category – making it Canada’s number one sector with the highest job vacancies.

To work in Canada as a healthcare professional, you must meet the Canada PR eligibility requirements, in addition to getting licenses and certifications to land a job in the healthcare sector:
Indian healthcare professionals are required to get their educational credentials assessed by a recognized assessing body like WES – to check if their credentials are equivalent as per Canadian standards.
Employers in Canada across provinces require healthcare workers with a certain amount of work experience to meet in-demand labour market needs. If you have less work experience, accumulate at least one year of work experience in your field of work to increase your chances of getting selected for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to apply for PR.
Canada wants immigrants who can integrate smoothly into the Canadian workforce. That’s why proving your proficiency in either English and/or French is essential. Exams like IELTS, PTE Core, and CELPIP are available for English and TEF and TCF or French. Score the minimum required score for Canada PR to qualify.
Last but not least, healthcare professionals must obtain licenses and certifications to practice in Canada legally. These requirements may differ depending on the province. Make sure to research that beforehand and fulfil the specific requirements for the intended province of residence.
Here are mainly two pathways to apply for Canada PR from India as a healthcare worker:
Pathway 1: Express Entry
It is the ideal pathway for nurses, surgeons, medical doctors, and other healthcare professionals to apply for a Canada PR visa from India. Express Entry has three programs, but as a professional from India, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is the preferred way. Your profile is evaluated based on your age, work experience, education, language skills, and other factors – and points are given out of 100 in the 67-point calculator. Extra points for a job offer and if you have any relatives in Canada are awarded.
After you gain minimum qualifying points 67 in the calculator, your profile enters the Express Entry. Here, it is again ranked against the same factors as the 67-point calculators in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and scores are given out of 1,200. The higher points you get, the more chances you have of securing an ITA for Canada PR.
If your score in the CRS score calculator is lower than the average cut-off, secure a job offer, retake the language test, or gain more work experience. Your profile will be valid for one year in the pool and after it expires, you must submit a new one.
Pathway 2: Provincial Nominee Program (PNPs)
If you wish to settle in a particular province, you must see if your work experience and skills are required there or not. Every Canadian province has unique eligibility requirements as per the local labour market needs, and if you meet those, go ahead and apply for the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) of that province. For instance, the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program, the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program, and more.
There are two ways to do this, either apply through Express Entry aligned streams, for which you need to have an active profile in the Express Entry pool, or else, apply for a direct nomination by meeting unique requirements. Indians who have strong ties to a specific province or have a job offer from an employer in that province are more likely to get a provincial nomination.
One of the best things about applying through Express Entry is that 80% of the PR applications are processed within 6 months. Further, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced six categories under category-based selection draws under Express Entry, one of which targets candidates with work experience in healthcare occupations under the National Occupation Classification (NOC).
Throughout Express Entry draws in 2024, 78.5% of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) will be issued under category-based draws, while the remaining 21.5% of ITAs will be issued in general draws.
Applying for Canada PR through Express Entry is getting extremely competitive. Thus, careful planning and strategizing are necessary to boost your chances. With the guidance of the best immigration consultants in Delhi, you can get the best solutions to make a well-informed decision.
