Looking to work in Canada from UAE?

You might have heard about the importance of a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) when applying for a Canadian job. While LMIA is a common requirement for employers to hire foreign workers, it’s not the only way to find a job in Canada in 2025.

See, an LMIA is basically a document issued by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) that confirms there is a need for a foreign worker to fill a job position. Employers in Canada generally need to obtain an LMIA before hiring a foreign worker. However, some job categories and programs allow you to bypass this requirement, making it easier for international workers to gain employment in Canada.

3 Ways to get a job in Canada from UAE without LMIA

OPTION 1: International Mobility Program (IMP)

The International Mobility Program (IMP) allows foreign workers to work in Canada without requiring an LMIA. The IMP includes several Canada Work Permits and categories under which you can apply. Let’s look at a few popular options:

  • Intra-Company Transfers (ICT): If you work for a multinational company that has offices in both the UAE and Canada, you may be eligible for an ICT work permit. This program allows employees of international companies to transfer to the Canadian branch or affiliate without the need for an LMIA. The employee must have worked for the company for a certain period (usually at least one year) before being transferred.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): If you decide to study in Canada and later graduate from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). This permit allows you to work in Canada for a period equivalent to the length of your program, up to three years. Since the PGWP is part of the International Mobility Program, you don’t need an LMIA.
  • Spousal Work Permits: If your spouse is in Canada on a valid study visa or work permit, you may be eligible for an open work permit as their dependent. This means you can work for any employer in Canada without needing an LMIA.

OPTION 2: Job Offer under LMIA Exemption Categories

While most employers need to go through the LMIA process, certain categories of jobs are exempt from the requirement. These include positions that fall under international trade agreements or are essential to the Canadian economy. Some of the key LMIA exemption categories are:

  • International Trade Agreements: If you are applying for a job in Canada that falls under an international trade agreement like the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) or the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), you may be able to work without an LMIA. Certain professionals and business people qualify under these agreements, and this can be a great way for skilled workers to bypass the LMIA process.
  • Research and Development (R&D): Canada actively encourages foreign talent in fields like science, technology, and innovation. If you have expertise in these areas, you may be able to secure a job in a Canadian research facility or university that doesn’t require an LMIA.
  • Cultural Exchange Programs: If you are part of a cultural exchange program between the UAE and Canada, you may not need an LMIA. These programs often allow individuals to come to Canada to work, especially in roles related to the arts, entertainment, or education.

OPTION 3: Explore Canada’s Express Entry System

The Express Entry System is Canada’s primary pathway for skilled workers to obtain permanent residence and includes several immigration programs that can help you find a job and move to Canada. While the Express Entry system itself does not require an LMIA, it can still help you secure employment in Canada through the following programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): If you meet the eligibility requirements for the FSWP (such as having a job offer, meeting language proficiency requirements, and having experience in a high-demand occupation), you may be invited to apply for permanent residency through Express Entry. While a job offer is not mandatory for the FSWP, having one can increase your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): If you have skills and experience in an occupation that is in demand in a specific province, you may be able to apply for a provincial nomination under a PNP. While some PNPs require an LMIA-based job offer, others do not, especially if your profession is highly needed in the province.

BONUS: Look for Remote Job Opportunities

Another way to work for a Canadian employer without needing an LMIA is by finding remote job opportunities. Many Canadian companies are now hiring remote workers from around the world, including the UAE. You can work for these companies from your home country while earning a Canadian salary. While this won’t lead to a Canadian work permit, it can be a great first step if you’re looking to establish connections with Canadian employers

Make sure to research the Canadian job market. Understanding the job market and knowing the industries and jobs in demand in Canada will give you a better chance of finding a job. Fields like healthcare, IT, engineering, and skilled trades often have openings. Also, Canadian employers value candidates with relevant education and experience. If possible, consider obtaining certifications that are recognized in Canada to improve your chances.

You can also leverage professional networks like LinkedIn to connect with Canadian employers. Networking is an important aspect of securing a job in Canada, so try to attend online job fairs and industry-specific events. Be Prepared for Canadian Work Culture. Familiarize yourself with Canadian workplace culture and expectations. This will help you adapt quickly and perform well in interviews.

Good Luck!
