Canada has a huge shortage of skilled teachers and is inviting you to apply for Canada PR visa from India. Whether you teach kindergarten or university students, you’ll find numerous job openings that align with your skills and work experience.
The most attractive feature of working in Canada as a teacher is the higher salaries. Though they might vary by province and years of experience, you still earn more than you did in your home country.
Find out the best options to immigrate.
Canada offers several immigration pathways to apply for Canada PR from India as a teacher. Take a look.
Federal Skilled Worker Program
The most ideal pathway for skilled immigration to Canada, the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is managed under the Express Entry program. Under this program, you are selected based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score in the EE pool rather than your occupation. The points you get depend on factors like age, work experience, language skills, education, and more.
If you are among the highest-scoring candidates, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will select you in the next Express Entry draw. Soon, you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence for which you are given 60 days to submit a complete application.
IRCC processes PR applications under the FSWP in about 6 to 8 months. If approved, you become a permanent resident of Canada, allowing you to live and work anywhere in the country.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Almost every Canadian province has their own PNP program that they use to nominate applicants who meet their local labour market gaps. You can apply for a provincial nomination, directly or through the federal Express Entry program.
Becoming a PR in a province will allow you to live and work in that province for a certain period before moving to a different province. You have a better chance at nomination if the province you apply for is looking for your level of teaching.
There are over 80 PNP streams in total. Some of the best streams for Indian teachers include:
Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP)
For Indian teachers who have skilled work experience or previously studied in Canada, the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) is a great federal program to consider. Under this program, you can live and work in one of Canada’s Atlantic provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island (PEI), New Brunswick (NB), or Newfoundland and Labrador (NL).
To be eligible, you need at least 1,560 hours of full-time and paid work experience in the last five years or 30 hours per week for one year, along with meeting language requirements. In addition, you require a job offer from an employer in one of the Atlantic provinces to immigrate and get licensed by the province. Meaning, you’ll be required to get a provincial teaching certificate before applying for PR through the AIP.
While each province has unique requirements that need to be met, the ones listed below are common ones that apply to most parts of Canada.
Teaching is a regulated occupation in Canada and you must get a license and certificate to work in any province or territory as an Indian teacher. To get the Certificate of Qualification or a teaching certificate, apply to the College of Teachers or teaching regulatory body in your province/territory before arriving in Canada. Submit academic transcripts, a teaching certificate from India, and a statement of professional standing as part of your certification application.
Jobs in Canada that don’t require a Certificate of Qualification or a teaching certificate, include International language teachers, English or French as a second language teachers, Adult continuing education teachers, Early childhood, daycare, or Montessori teachers, Music teachers, and Tutors.
English and French are the official Canadian languages that you need to prove your proficiency in to teach as an Indian teacher. Submit language test results such as IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core for English, and TEF or TCF for French. The minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score for quality may differ by province or territory.
Getting a provincial teaching certificate does not require teaching experience, but it helps when you look for teaching jobs in Canada from India. Further, Canada’s education system is different from India’s, so you must register for additional training to get familiarized before immigrating. This training is for up to one year and includes education-related courses and a supervised practicum.
Canadian provinces and territories need proof of your moral character before granting you a teaching certificate. For this, you may need to provide character references and background check records from India or places you have worked or lived. In addition, provide professional references from your current or former employers.
According to the 2024 Canada Occupation In-demand List, the following teaching jobs are in high demand in Canada:
British Columbia
Teaching is a well-paid profession in Canada, with the average salary for a teacher being $48,750 (INR 30,12,909) per year or $25 (INR 1,545) per hour. Teachers who are just starting their careers in teaching can earn up to $37,551 (INR 23,20,774) per year, while those with years of teaching experience can make up to $81,228 (INR 50,20,155) per year.
There you have it! Research which immigration programs are suitable for you and apply to live and work in Canada as an Indian teacher permanently. The best part about this is that you can start your certification process even before your PR is approved, allowing you to start looking for a teaching job soon after arriving in Canada.
