The Germany Opportunity Card allows non-EU nationals to arrive in Germany and search for a suitable job. The candidates are not required to offer evidence of a job offer/employment contract for application.

Candidates who are acknowledged as skilled professionals or who can get at least six points on the system of points are eligible to get the Opportunity Card in Germany. Further, they must possess assured monetary support to stay in Germany.

The validity of the Opportunity Card is 1 year. The holders have to focus on identifying a suitable job during this period. The maximum extension allowed on the Opportunity Card is 2 years. The application for an extension has to be submitted to the Registration Office for Foreigners in Germany.

You can confirm the necessary criteria for selection through the points system by comparing/assessing your credentials. A total of 6 points are required to get the Opportunity Card.

The fundamental criteria included skills in the German language at the A1 level or B2 level in the English language. A University Degree or 2 years of vocational training acknowledged in your nation of residence is also required.

Further, you will also have to demonstrate that you are financially independent. This can be through a part-time job of 20 hours weekly or an employment contract. It must be noted that nil points are allocated to fulfil the basic criteria. 

The other criteria specified under the system of points include language proficiency, age, work experience, and your link with Germany. The age considered is the age at the time of filing the application.

Opportunity Card Application Process

The application for the Opportunity Card can be submitted at the authorized overseas mission in your nation of residence. To do this, you will have to submit an application and possess a lawful passport. You will also have to provide evidence of your language proficiency, educational credentials, and previous stays in Germany, if any.

You must possess adequate fiscal means and your monetary independence can be demonstrated through a part-time job employment contract for 20 hours weekly. The authorized agency will confirm the extent to which the applicants fulfil the specified criteria according to the system of points.

The Opportunity Card applicants must possess suitable proof like certificates, employment references, etc. You can also demonstrate residence in Germany through utility bills, employment contracts, or rental contracts. This is if you have stayed in Germany previously for a longer duration.

The applications for Opportunity Cards are being accepted from June 1, 2024, onwards at the Registration Office for Foreigners in Germany. Applications are also accepted at the applicable German mission in your nation of residence.

Opportunity Card broadens the scope of the earlier Skilled Immigration Act to include a new Residence Permit for eligible non-EU nationals. It explicitly aims to assist individuals who do not have a permanent job offer/employment contract in Germany and wish to seek jobs.
