The German Work Visa is a Germany immigration pathway for overseas skilled workers and professionals. It is a category of Residence Permit. All overseas nationals who do not have Citizenship or Permanent Residency in Switzerland, EEA, or the EU require a Residence Permit to reside in Germany.

Germany Work Visa Requirements

To receive the German Work Visa you will require:

An offer of a job

You have to get an offer of a job before applying for the Germany Work Visa. This can be a part-time, remote job, or short-term job. You have to be an employee and not a freelance worker.

A reasonable salary

No fixed minimum salary has been specified. However, you cannot be underpaid and have to get an income on par with Germans doing a similar job.

Competency for the job

You must possess the necessary proficiency to do the job. For instance, to work as a Car Mechanic, you must be able to fix a car. Your job can be not related to your education.

Authorization to do the job

You have to possess all the special qualifications and permits required for the job. For instance, Lawyers, Engineers, and Doctors require special credentials.

If you do not have citizenship of the US, the UK, Australia, Albania, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina, South Korea, Serbia, San Marino, North Macedonia, New Zealand, Montenegro, Monaco, Kosovo, Japan, or Israel, you must possess:

  • Training to do the job. Your training or education must have recognition from the Agentur für Arbeit. It has to be on par with 24 months of training in Germany. If you possess a Degree from a University, you can preferably obtain the Blue Card. Your job can be not related to your education.

If you do not have citizenship in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, South Korea, San Marino, New Zealand, Monaco, Japan, or Israel, you must possess:

  • An employer in Germany with an office, even if you are doing a remote job

If you are aged above 45 years, you must possess:

  • A net salary of a minimum of Euros 49,830 annually; or
  • A Pension plan that assures a post-retirement income

You do not require spoken proficiency in Germany to get the Work Visa.

Overseas Application

You can also file an application for a German Work Visa from your nation of residence. This is preferable as you can begin to work immediately after arriving in Germany.

To apply in your nation you must:

  • Obtain recognition for your vocational training
  • Obtain an appointment at the Consulate or Embassy of Germany in your nation
  • Be present for the booked appointment and offer your documents. The necessary documents vary based on the nation of residence.
  • Obtain a National Visa that allows you to arrive in Germany and begin to work
  • Covert the National Visa to a German Work Visa after arrival in Germany

Alternatives to Work Visa

If you are unable to obtain a German Work Visa, there are other options to work in Germany such as:

Blue Card

Skilled workers who have a degree from a University or IT Specialists who do not have a degree can apply for the Blue Card. There is a specific minimum income criterion. The Blue Card is preferable over Work Visa if you are qualified as it has faster processing and you can swiftly obtain Permanent Residence.

Youth Mobility Visa and Working Holiday Visa

Working Holiday and Youth Mobility Visas are for youth from specific nations. It offers work authorization of 1 year and there are no education or salary criteria.

Job Seeker Visa

Germany Job Seeker Visa authorizes holders to look for a job in the nation for 6 months. After receiving a job, a Blue Card can be obtained.

Internship Visa

University students can apply for an Internship Visa and do an internship for a maximum of 6 months.

Au pair Visa

You can work as an au pair on an Au Pair Visa, a minimum income of Euros 280 is needed and education is not required.

Family Reunion Visa

Children and Spouses of German residents can apply for the Family Reunion Visa.
