Exciting news for families looking to reunite in Canada!

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is preparing to send invitations to potential sponsors.

Starting May 21, 2024, IRCC will send invitations to apply to 35,700 potential sponsors who have expressed interest. The goal is to receive 20,500 complete applications, with invitations sent out over two weeks.

Who is eligible for PGP’s next round?

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) enables citizens and permanent residents to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada as permanent residents through a lottery system.

Individuals who submitted their applications under PGP in 2020 to apply for the 2024 intake, will be considered for the upcoming round of invitations.

Under the PGP system, applicants will be invited randomly. If invited, invitations will be sent to sponsors through an email provided on their interest-to-sponsor form.

Process to Receive Canada through PGP

To receive permanent residence through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), candidates must:

  • Fulfil all the eligibility requirements, including being eligible to sponsor, living in Canada, signing an undertaking, meeting minimum income requirements, and more.
  • Complete an interest to sponsor form on the IRCC’s website. To be considered for the PGP 2024 intake, applicants must not have received an invitation to apply in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

If invited

  • Check the email on the day of reopening and for the next two weeks.
  • Submit an application if invited through Permanent Residence Portal, or the Representative Residence Portal before the deadline mentioned in the email.

If not invited

In this case, you will still be able to bring your parents and grandparents to Canada through the Super Visa pathway. Similar to PGP, PR holders and citizens in Canada can sponsor their parents and grandparents but as temporary residents.

If approved under Super Visa, they will be able to stay in Canada for a maximum of 5 years per entry, with the ability to extend this stay for two years. Super visa is valid for 10 years, which you can reapply after its expiry.

Unlike PGP, the Super Visa pathway is available throughout the year, with sponsors being able to apply around the year. Applications submitted under both PGP and Super Visa are processed within 112 days from receipt.

Under the Canada Immigration Levels Plans 2024-2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is planning to welcome 32,000 immigrants through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) - in 2024 alone. This number will rise to 34,000 immigrants for 2025 and 2026 each.
